This brief sets out the obstacles to EU membership and NATO accession for Macedonia and gives recommendations on how these challenges could be overcome. It argues that Macedonia’s development can only be furthered if internal inter-ethnic relations and relations with neighboring countries are improved. Especially the long-standing dispute with Greece over Macedonia's name needs to be addressed. The brief suggests accepting Macedonia in NATO under the name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
