This article analyzes the role of the NATO Response Force (NRF) in the Alliance's transformation. As the NRF has only been deployed on a few, relatively insignificant operations, many observers have suggested that the force has no place in the Alliance. Notwithstanding the significant challenges facing the force, the author argues that the NRF may be entering a new phase. The increasing interest in the NRF among NATO members may lead to an expanded role for the NRF in the future, allowing it to be a key aspect of the Alliance's activities.
