Though the de facto (or unrecognized) states of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Nagorno-Karabakh have existed for almost a quarter-century, their internal dynamics remain largely unexplored. This issue of the CAD partially fills the void. Its articles investigate the electoral politics of these 'peripheral states'; their relations with the outside world; and their publics’ diverging opinions, particularly on two topics – the preferred future status of their ‘statelets’, and the trustworthiness of each entity’s leader.
