This paper argues that India's agricultural sector faces some significant challenges. In a market in which government policy plays a central role, the author argues that the agricultural sector needs to respond to changing consumer demand and projected domestic growth. This requires law and public policy reform, particularly with regard to the broker system. The author sets out a number of recommendations aimed at creating a more efficient and effective agricultural market which improves the practices throughout the sector.
