Given the prominence of the African Union's (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) in the maintenance of peace and security in Africa, the extent to which and how the PSC discharges its functions effectively determine the ability of the AU to address current and emerging peace and security challenges on the continent properly. This paper argues that although the PSC has achieved a great deal in terms of promoting peace and security in Africa, there is ample room for improvement to realize its potential. The author assesses the African security situation in 2012 and the PSC's response. In concluding, the review suggests a number of recommendations to enhance the PSC's effectiveness.
