The commentary discusses the positive elements of Abe's foreign policy for Japan. The author argues that although it is far too early to give a full account of his foreign policy, early signs are positive. Abe faces challenges in managing Japan's relations with China and South Korea. On the other hand, there are opportunities to build stronger ties with the US and Russia. Japan is likely to be in a much better international position by 2014 if Abe can contain the tension with its regional neighbors while forging deeper relationships with other key powers.
