The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is facing the dilemmas of democratization and political transition. The author argues that the international community should draw upon lessons learnt from previous democratization experiences in Latin America, Africa and Eastern and Southern Europe in order to better understand the events and to avoid past mistakes.
