In the run up to the 2019 High-level Political Forum (HLPF), this paper looks at progress in Africa on UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16), which focuses on achieving peace, justice and strong institutions. More specifically, the text’s author outlines 1) why Africa is well-positioned to lead on SDG 16; 2) key trends in reporting on SDG 16 through voluntary national reports across the continent since the first HLPF in 2016; 3) findings from a survey of experiences with SDG 16 in 38 countries; 5) the infrastructure for planning, implementing and reporting on SDG 16; 6) strategies used to feed SDG 16 into policymaking and accountability mechanisms in different states, and more.
