This policy brief explores two issues that are testing relations between the US and its allies in the Gulf: democratic transitions in the Arab world and regional security. Given that the process of change in the region is likely to be prolonged and difficult, the author explores how the US and the Gulf states perceive what is happening in the Arab states. It is further discussed how cooperation can be improved to protect long-term security interests. In conclusion, the author analyses if there are sufficient common denominators to sustain the partnership between the Gulf states and the US.
