This NATO Defense College paper offers two articles on issues of concern to European security. The first examines European methods of crisis management and crisis prevention. The author analyzes this issue by evaluating recent and historical developments, as well as future prospects both for the European Union and for European citizens in general. The second article explores the progress made in the relationship between the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) and NATO; the difficulties that remain unresolved; and perspectives for the future of this relationship. The author examines the question of whether there should be a formal agreement between the Atlantic Alliance and the European Union, obliging both sides to define their shared and separate areas of responsibility.
