This article explains the important role local coordination committees (LCCs) in Syria. LCCs organized the initial protests against the Assad regime, uploaded media showing regime atrocities and created networks of solidarity with other committees to unify the political message of the opposition. However a lack of funding means that many of these non-sectarian grassroot structures become reliant on the better financed militias and paramilitaries, many of whom have a sectarian agenda.
