As Turkey ascends to 'second tier BRIC' status, new foreign policy ambitions have emerged. The author argues that these ambitions have met reality checks and have been complicated by the Arab uprisings. For example, its initial opposition to regime change in the Arab spring countries, especially through foreign intervention, had to be amended in light of Western action. The AKP government has also relaunched talks with the nation's Kurdish population in order to legitimize its support for democracy and human rights.
