This article focuses on the pre and post revolutionary Muslim Brotherhood and the challenges the Brotherhood have faced since taking power. The author argues that the organization has been focused on maintaining unity, often using the application of Islamic principles as a means to this end while allowing neoliberal policies inherited from the Mubarak regime to pass through unnoticed. However the group will have to move from identity politics to policy debates concerning economics which could increase fissures within the group. The author concludes that the current simplistic form of Islamism presented by the Muslim Brotherhood will be replaced by more sophisticated and diverse forms of religiously-motivated political activism as the group responds to the country’s challenges.
