This issue brief analyzes the crisis in Mali and the Sahel-Sahara region following the March 2012 coup d’état and subsequent insurgency by Islamist rebels. It explores the roots of this crisis and responses from national, regional, and international actors. It then turns to the long-term challenges that the region faces before outlining paths toward a more comprehensive approach to achieving peace, stability, and development in the region.
