Despite declarations made by President Viktor Yanukovych, who has stressed the need to strengthen the importance of Ukraine’s regions in the process of governance, the actual measures undertaken have led to an even greater centralisation of power in Ukraine. Ukraine’s regions are becoming less competitive, lack regular sources of funding, and are heavily dependent on decisions taken in Kiev. This has hampered growth and increased disparities in living standards between the regions.
