International Relations is dominated by theories that assume there are two basic ‘drivers’ behind foreign policy – interests and fear. Richard Ned Lebow, however, wonders if this is true. In this Theory Talk he looks far back into history and conjures up a more varied set of reasons behind political action. He additionally discusses how war drove innovations in IR thinking in the 20th century and uses Isaiah Berlin’s famous nomenclature to describe himself as a fox rather than as a hedgehog.
