This brief argues that the West's preoccupation with West Africa's war on terror and Islamic insurgents has led to the underestimation and outright ignorance of the role of organized crime syndicates in various West African conflicts. The authors argue that the adoption of cocaine trafficking by many cross-border communities has allowed corruption to undermine state institutions, fund localized conflicts and open the door for jihadists.
