This testimony addresses US vital interests in the Afghanistan and the surrounding region following 2014. The author says there are three vital interests which are that the US needs to prevent the use of the region as a base for terrorist groups, to ensure nuclear weapons or material do not fall into hostile actors' hands, and to prevent a nuclear conflict between Pakistan and India. He argues these issues necessitate the US to have a base in the region so it can exert influence on the regional actors and maintain pressure on terrorist groups.
