According to this bulletin, Europe has not yet decided on one coherent policy on how to respond to the US 'pivot' to Asia. The lack of a substantial military presence in the Asia-Pacific grants the EU greater freedom of maneuver to pursue its trade strategy without criticism about containment from China. However, the EU has a new reality to face in Asia. It does not have an automatic seat at the table and therefore must work all the harder to secure its own self-interests.
