This brief discusses the prospects for economic and political transition in China. According to the author, demand for public participation in decisionmaking and a more transparent government is growing in China. China will also have to shift from an export-driven growth model to one more reliant on domestic demand and innovation. Finally, a stable geopolitical environment will be critical in shaping the trajectory of China’s transition.
