This paper outlines the emergence of Britain's nuclear deterrence posture and how governments have sought to balance this with effective non-proliferation diplomacy. This goes to the heart of the challenge that the Trident Commission is seeking to address - how Britain can secure its own national security whilst strengthening global security through multilateral nuclear disarmament.
