International trade is a critical component of the US economy, with US merchandise imports and exports amounting to US$2.2 trillion and US$1.5 trillion respectively in 2011. The efficient flow of legally traded goods in and out of the United States is thus a vital element of the country’s economic security. This report assesses the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) import strategy.
