This paper argues that Japan is making an important contribution to Afghan security and development. While not a troop-supporting state, Japan has an instrumental role in facilitating security cooperation, especially in relation to disarmament. Through this, the author argues that Japan is demonstrating solidarity with the US and its credentials as a responsible international citizen. He suggests the latter point is particularly important as the country continues its bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council.
