This brief analyzes the participation of women in Pakistani politics. The author argues that more women are contesting elections and voting than in the past. However, political parties have done little to increase the role of women in the political process, because they fear low female turnout. Furthermore, as the Local Government Ordinance bans political parties from participating in local elections, they cannot recruit women at a grassroots level.
