This paper looks at what distinguishes India’s youth politics from other forms of politics in the country. The author highlights the importance of identity, associations with crime and violence, links between ideas of politics and gang behavior and class differences in political engagement. He argues that youth politics is informed by restlessness and spontaneity and that it is more about participation for its own sake. He also believes that, as rapid changes affect what it means to be young in India, the politics of youth will begin to leave its own distinctive mark on the country.
