This commentary examines the role of the Internet in Chinese politics and government proposals to introduce real-name registration. The author explains that observers hope growing internet activism could be a sign of growing democracy in the country. However, he suggests it could have the opposite effect and allow the advancement of nationalist, and even extremist, views. This author concludes that this could be dangerous for China, especially if belligerent views begin to influence the country's foreign policy.
