This commentary focuses on the Chinese naval maneuvers that came to a close off the Malaysian coast on 26 March 2013. In particular, it wonders whether the maneuvers will inspire retaliatory naval actions by other nations in the South China Sea, and what the maneuvers’ impact might be on bilateral and multilateral ties in the region, as well as with the US. Finally, and in the case of Malaysia, the commentary's author wonders whether Kuala Lumpur needs to rethink its quiet diplomacy strategy towards China.
