This commentary examines the role of the US in managing tensions between China and Japan. The author argues that nationalism, Japanese historical revisionism and Chinese foreign policy are creating a potentially dangerous situation. In this context, the US could reduce tensions by backing Japan's administrative control of the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands until a peaceful settlement is achieved, and by reining in Prime Minister Abe's revisionist interpretations of history.
