This report underlines the need for increased precision in historical analysis of Afghanistan. It does this by identifying gaps in understanding of people such as Yunus Khalis and his connection with Usama bin Ladin and al-Qaida. It suggests that the sources investigated in connection to Yunus Khalis suggest a link between the relative peace in Nangarhar in the 1990s and the presence of al-Qaida and other militant groups near Jalalabad toward the end of the Afghan Civil War.
