This paper is a transcript of the keynote address at the 19th Japan-US Security Seminar in March 2013. It focuses on the history of the US-Japanese alliance, given the political changes domestically in both countries, and its future prospects. The speaker comments on Japanese attitudes toward China, North Korea, and the US.
