This paper examines the social, psychological, physical and economic challenges facing women in conflict and post-conflict societies in Africa. The author argues that the cessation of hostilities transforms, rather than resolves, the problems that women in these countries must confront. In particular, gender-based violence and economic insecurity continue to affect the well-being of female populations during the post-conflict phase. The author concludes that such issues must be addressed as part of peace-building processes.
