This paper examines how local ownership has been incorporated into peacebuilding processes in Sierra Leone since the end of the civil war in 2002, with particular attention given to the relationship between local actors, national government and the international community. The author argues that there are difficulties in implementing locally-derived peacebuilding solutions. Nonetheless, local ownership remains essential to long-lasting peace in Sierra Leone. The paper provides a list of recommendations aimed at various domestic and international actors operating in the country.
