This paper provides a summary of a United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) panel discussion held in Durban on 6 December 2011. The panel found that climate change requires collective responsibility both within and between African states. Adaptation will need to be multi-disciplinary and conflict-sensitive. Actors will need to pay particular attention to human security challenges as cross-border issues become increasingly salient. In concluding, the summary stresses that national interest must be replaced by global responsibility.
