This brief discusses the growing need for alternatives to deportation systems in returning rejected asylum seekers to their countries of origin. It identifies a number of methods for more successful and sustainable efforts in the area in Denmark and other comparable northern European countries. It argues that countries need to improve their understanding of those who are being returned. This would require greater institutional cooperation between states and NGOs at the national and international level.
