This paper examines concerns regarding the international availability of rare earth elements (REEs). It looks at their role in high-tech end-applications, including defense and electricity generation, and at the policies of the dominant producer of REEs, China. The author argues that Diversification of REE supply is becoming an important prerequisite for the international competitiveness of highly industrialized countries, and should be a priority for Poland.
