This paper assesses security cooperation between Japan and the US and Washington's general commitment to alliances. The authors argue that US cooperation with Japan is a good measure of US readiness to reinforce its political guarantees with military capabilities at a time of shrinking defense budgets, and thus should be observed carefully by the United States’s NATO allies.
