This bulletin discusses the main reason for the protests in Bulgaria since mid-January 2013 and the implications of the crisis for the country’s near political future after the elections in May 2013. The author argues that the unstable internal situation in Bulgaria is not conducive to strengthening its influence in the EU and that regardless of which party gains power in the elections, the country will fail to fulfill its main objectives, one of which is to join the Schengen area.
