This brief examines how possibly large reserves of unconventional gas, such as shale, could shape Ukraine's energy policy and the entire region's geopolitical landscape. The author indicates that domestic politics and Russian transit investment could limit the development of Ukraine's gas sector. He also suggests that despite the signing of commercial arrangements with major international resource companies, the sector's future and its impact on Ukraine's politics remain unclear.
