This brief examines Venezuela's international standing in the post-Chávez era. The authors argue that the country's unstable domestic situation has weakened the government at the regional level. The authors believe president Maduro faces three dilemmas which he must overcome to address Venezuela’s problems: 1) What direction his government takes, 2) whether he maintains the military’s privileges, and 3) how he will garner support among the people without making commitments towards the West.
