This paper surveys the origins and evolution of two separate but inter-related disputes over the Chagos Archipelago. One dispute is between the Chagos Islanders and the British Government over the legality of the former's removal from the island. The other is between the UK and Mauritius and concerns sovereignty claims over the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). The author argues that both disputes have appeared to be all but intractable in the past, but that there are some signs they could move forward in the future.
