This paper provides insights into the Chinese leadership transition, its impact on China's domestic course as well as its relations with the rest of the world. The author writes that early signals suggest a more effective combating of official corruption and reduction of social inequalities will be top priorities. On the international level, he believes, efforts to go beyond the 'muddling through' which arguably characterized the last leadership can be expected. However, he is not sure, if all these efforts will be part of a coherent and sustained reform program that can meet China's many contemporary challenges.
