This paper discusses the concept of gender-aware demobilization, disarmament, and reintegration. The author shows how gender awareness in the earliest transition and post-conflict periods impacts upon the possibility of peaceful development in the longer term. She analyzes a number of demobilization processes in which women's rights have been compromised, and uses feminist theories to draw conclusions about how demobilization exercises can be improved to address the needs of both female and male ex-combatants. She concludes by explaining why plans for peaceful reintegration must incorporate a careful analysis of gender ideologies.
