This paper analyzes the transformation processes in Bulgaria in order to determine the most influential factors leading to the sharp decline in the defense industry. The paper discusses the costs - and benefits in the form of military conversion - of these processes to Bulgarian development. The author further examines the Bulgarian military-industrial complex, and analyzes options for the redeployment of its infrastructure and potential.
