This paper analyzes the outcome and implications of Angola's second post-war elections in August 2012. The elections demonstrated that the opposition parties are no longer a residual political force and that the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) party is rapidly losing its democratic credentials. The author argues that the governing strategy of the preceding decades will have to be rethought as Angolans now expect more from their government.
