This working paper provides a broad overview of the challenges facing the monetary system today, with particular emphasis on the BRICS (Brazil, Russian Federation, India, China and South Africa) and Asian nations. The author argues that governance is the central challenge facing the international monetary system. This governance challenge is separated into four critical elements of adjustment, liquidity, confidence and leadership, which the author analyzes with regard to the BRICS and Asia.
