This paper discusses the need for a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for oceans and coasts to preserve marine resources. The authors argue that even though ensuring environmental sustainability is one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), the ocean is not explicitly mentioned. Therefore, the SDG framework should include elements for sustainable ocean management when it replaces the MDG in 2015.
