This opinion piece discusses Russia's involvement in the Syrian conflict. The author argues that Russia's strong support of the Assad regime is due to its strategic interests in the Mediterranean, which include energy exports and naval access. However, he contends that the unpredictable nature of the Syrian conflict could detrimentally affect Russia's long term interests in the region.
