This paper examines the political context behind the June 2013 Iranian Presidential elections. It traces the historical trends in Iranian elections, the patterns of voting behavior, as well as the factions and political landscape within politics in the country. The authors offer some recommendations for the US on how to engage with the prospective new leader. They suggest that the Obama administration should urge him to work with the international community and seek to east the isolation that Iran has suffered due to its nuclear program.
