This brief examines South Africa's adoption of the Implementation of the Geneva Conventions Act 2012, and the implications of this for the country's domestic law. The act provides for and permits the potential prosecution of war crime offenses by South Africans both in and outside the country. The author suggests that the Act has significantly expanded South Africa's international criminal law regime as it can apply to crimes committed prior to South Africa's democratization.
