This brief outlines the trends and factors behind regional integration in East Asia in the context of accelerated integration processes related to global power shifts and the US rebalancing to the Asia-Pacific. It examines the role of ASEAN in regional cooperation and its development; trilateral cooperation between China, South Korea, and Japan; and the strengths and weaknesses of East Asian regionalism. The author concludes by offering some recommendations for the EU related to these issues and suggests that increased economic cooperation in East Asia is in the EU's interest.
